Spring Cleaning

Spring Cleaning

I photographed this as I passed it on a back road near me, and while I dislike working from photographs, there was nothing I could do in this case. I had it in mind for a year and in the deepest of January decided it was time for a little "Spring Cleaning" of my own, makeing time for artwork done "just because." A friend saw, as I did, the "ghosts" of decades of spring cleaners and laundry hangers...

This is the third update, so click on the image to see the progress. It's a memorial commissioned by a friend and customer--check the "writing" column for another reference to the person who commissioned this piece, and visit my "Commissioned Dogs" or "People" page for a pencil portrait of this customer with another of her dogs.

May Flowers
watercolor, 18" X 22"
February 2006
The display page includes a series of working photos of this painting.

Still lifes are always popular, and tulips are a favorite. This one was designed by myself and the client from photos of vases of flowers and backgrounds taken from catalogs when we couldn't find a photo that worked for her. Also, she had wanted to include a photo of one of her schnauzers somehow in this piece, and so, in the lower right corner you'll see a blank spot that will be a small framed photo of the dog when it's finished.

A trip into downtown Pittsburgh can afford hundreds of photos, as it did this warm, sunny April Thursday when I saw these three men apparently remembering some good time among the three of them as they are clearly reflected in a window.

Moses is enjoying the autumn sun, one of her favorite activities (in any season), and it was also the autumn of her life a few months before she died at age 19. She was my most photographed cat because she was a subtle gray and was very, very still; this photo starkly highlights the softening of her features by age, yet she is still dignified. City Flowercart

digital, color saturated and posterized in Photoshop

This flower cart has been on Liberty Avenue for years, and as if it wasn't colorful enough, pushing the color a little farther brought out the rainbow umbrellas and the flowers in buckets as well as displayed some interesting colors found in the pavement and facade.

Snow is in the air on a crisp day with occasional showers of very fine snow. The actual photo shows a slight rainbow in the rays, but you may or may not be able to see it on your monitor.

A very big tree fell in the woods and no doubt the squirrels heard it. I saw this while walking through Settler's Cabin Park in Robinson Township. the tree must have been one of the oldest oaks from when the site was actually a settler's farm. The slender young trees seem to be clustered around it, watching, and remind me of Alexander Pope's "Gulliver's Travels", when Gulliver visits the land of the Lilliputians and awakens tied to the ground and surrounded by hundreds of tiny people.

Just one of those astonishing moments of beauty around the house when the sun lit the forsythia and deepened the shadows among the Blue Willow dishes on the plate rack. And just for fun, more forsythia...

"I Am So Blessed"
December 2005

Yesterday I handed over one of the last of my commissioned animal portraits for this holiday season. The couple who came to pick it up was dressed in Steeler sweatshirts and jeans, black leather jackets and a Santa hat, and smelled a little of beer and cigarettes, not the type many would imagine would want a portrait of their cat, but I knew better.

"Loving Care for Your Senior Cat"
March 2006

Bogey dares you to guess how old he is. He knows you'll be wrong, because he knows that cats have a unique way of hiding aging from even the most attentive owners. Once cats reach three to four years of age they can go well into their teens before they show signs of physical weakness, arthritis, failing eyesight and hearing and other common ailments of an aging body of any species.

[Please visit my Manuscripts page to read the rest of the article, or visit the My Three Cats & Co., Inc. website to read this and other articles I've written for this client. I also designed the website and created most of the artwork for it, even photographed a lot of products!]

_______________

seasonal essay

I've included this one as my favorite spring essay...and because I'm busy out there planting peas...

"On Planting Peas"
January 2, 2004

It is early March and I am planting peas. The wan spring sun is finding its heat and lays like a warm hand upon my back as I work. Signs of approaching spring fill my senses in the mild air on my skin, the scent of damp soil and the shrieks of children as they run in frenzied circles of freedom, much like the birds swooping and circling above whistling their mix of songs.

_______________

related to artwork

I've included this one because I'm doing a portrait for the subject. Several years ago I assisted in adopting another dog, and this is the story I wrote for the "Petsburgh Press", Animal Friends' newsletter.

"The Story of Smudge and Carol"
February 2004

For the first few weeks in her new home, Smudge seemed like a senior dog with her quiet and serious demeanor, but you'd never know that to see her now with her perky ears, bright eyes and exuberant nature.
