logos

Sometimes a logo is just a formalized way of typing a business name, and sometimes it's a multi-part group of icons and colors that identify the complexities of a corporation, and used on everything from lighted signs to printed napkins. To whatever extent a logo is used, they are an interplay among the identity of the customer, the company's position in the marketplace, the end use of the logo, and the relative likes and dislikes of all involved. They are very, very fun and exciting to work on, and are often the first step in a long relationship with a customer.
Scroll down to see these logos and read a little about each one (sorry, little icons are not clickable--yet!):

Rubicon Aviation Training, Inc.

I initially designed this logo through another artist, who went on to manage the customer's website while I designed the printed materials. Researching the story of the Rubicon added necessary insight to the design of the logo, and I designed the river to be subtle, avoiding the cliche of depicting a more graphic river. Please visit the Rubicon Aviation Training customer page for more sample products.

Westbrook Pharmacy

I designed this logo for one of my print broker customers, which contains an original illustration, is to be used on a pocket folder and informational inserts the pharmacy would begin to distribute, as well as new business cards, prescription pads and the like. Please visit the Westbrook Pharmacy customer page for more sample products.

Premier Personal Healthcare

This doctor opened the first "concierge" medical practice in the area, on where the customer pays a yearly fee for total access to the doctor. This was a big risk, and the logo, website and all other collateral materials were critical. All the elements are original, and while you can't wander too far from a caduceus when workign with medical professions, the challenge is to make it look unique. Please visit the Premier Personal Healthcare customer page to see other products.

Greenprint, from Allegheny Land Trust

In determining the organization's strategic plan for growing into the future, the ALT board of directors devised a plan for determining the best choices for land conservation. They named the plan "Greenprint" and we designed a logo using one of the methods of determination, the Venn diagram, which also became a logo in itself. Please visit the Allegheny Land Trust customer page to see other products.

AnswerGroup and Answer Computer Technology

AnswerGroup is the parent company of Answer Computer Technology, and provides computer repair, hardware and systems to businesses. In the computer business it's difficult to be distinctive and still keep the feel for the discipline, and the customer didn't want to go too "techie" with either logo.

J. D. Llama Estates

I've moved with this customer from her original card for only Carnegie Antiques printed in black on white, through the two logos and business cards below which utilized clip art and type...

...to this design for Carnegie Antiques, which includes one of the photographs in the first series I took for the customer as we began to reconfigure her image...

...and this for the entire group of companies the owner runs. Visit the J.D. Llama Estates customer page for other designs for this customer, including post cards, advertising and a website.

Carnegie Community Development Corporation

In collaboration with the artist directing the organization's identity project who chose the colors and pointed out the "Carnegie Renaissance" logo (below) as one they liked, I chose to create an original electronic illustration patterned on an actual block of buildings in Carnegie.

Max's Specialty Sandwich Shoppe

concept and original illustration based on available clip art (the sandwich content and color were greatly customized!); this logo will be printed on an awning and on various materials for the store

Carnegie Renaissance

I was one of the founding members of this organization; I had the idea for this logo when we first began discussing the organization, and I chose to create an original electronic illustration patterned on an actual block of buildings in Carnegie. Ironically, Carnegie lost a good portion of this block in a fire in 2005, so here it's commemmorated in the logo. Please visit the Carnegie Renaissance customer page for more designs incorporating this logo and its elements.

Carnegie, Bursting with Culture

One of the ideas behind marketing Carnegie was to advertise its cultural assets--at least four galleries, a music school, and artists of all sorts who live in and around town. This logo is an original ink illustration enhanced with type that was inspired by listening to the music from the annual Arts & Heritage Festival on Main Street from my deck. Please visit the Carnegie Renaissance customer page for more designs incorporating this logo and its elements.

Carnegie Arts & Heritage Festival

It's really overboard, but how else do you describe all the wonderful things that happen at a festival? It's also an original electronic illustration with type enhancement. Please visit the Carnegie Arts & Heritage customer page for more designs including this logo.

Creative Marketplace

The Creative Marketplace is the section for artists and crafters at our annual Arts & Heritage Festival. Visit Carnegie Arts & Heritage customer page for more designs including this logo.

Historical Construction Equipment Association

This illustration includes an ink illustration in a style reminiscent of the 1940s when many books were written for and about the construction industry. The client chose his three favorite pieces of equipment and asked that I sketch them and place them in a realistic setting considering their use, but one that would also fit the logo layout.

3rd Street Yoga

All those layers of soft orange are given dimension using a combination of flat print and thermography for this yoga instructor and teacher trainer. Please visit the 3rd Street Yoga customer page for more materials incorporating this logo and colors, including business cards, training certificates and a website.

Financial Foresight Group

This logo began using a compass or other directional tool as an icon, and moved around to the blocks, illustrating the steps to financial success. It has gold foil but was designed to also be printed with metallic gold ink

Lower Chartiers Watershed Council

This logo was designed in coordination with the organization's board of directors. The colors represent natural assets in the watershed: blue represents water, brick red represents the earth and medium green represents the diversity of flora. Please visit the Lower Chartiers Watershed Council customer page for more materials incorporating this logo and colors, including busienss cards, training certificates and a website.

South Fayette Conservation Group

This logo was designed in coordination with the organization's board of directors. The elements represent the assets found in the community that are of interest to a conservation organization: agriculture, hiking on trails, canoeing on the creek, wetlands, woods and hills. Please visit the South Fayette Conservation Group customer page for more materials for this customer.

Primary Health Screen

A logo that needs to compete with a billion others in the medical field can be a difficult assignment. In the end, this one worked well.

The Shops at the Towne Fair

This place never got beyond the planning stages, but the logo was too pretty to file away. Perhaps I'll be able to recycle it some day.

St. Patrick's Day Parade

This logo was designed to be used on one of the banners in the City of Pittsburgh's St. Patrick's Day Parade. They didn't want leprechauns or rainbows with pots of gold, so naturally music was the best choice.

Historical Society of South Fayette Township

The logo for this small but passionate organization includes the historical elements of the community, coal mining, agriculture, and whiskey production, especially at the time of the Whiskey Rebellion. Some of the icons were readily available in clip art, but others I had to create in a style that matched the ones we had already chosen.

The Body Forum

Finding a little humanoid icon that didn't look like everyone else's was impossible, so I made up my own for this client, a personal trainer.

W.B. Kania & Associates, LLC

This firm of accountants needed a more comprehensive identity, but nothing too fancy, and just to be used for business cards and letterhead.

Panhandle Tails Day

I participate in this benefit dog walk on my local trail as an artist vendor, and it's my pleasure to have designed the logo, used on all correspondence and special bandannas for participants.
