Feline Greeting Cards

Peaches and Peonies There it is, that moment that turns on all the lights for me…one of my cats in the sun, the conditions that have inspired most of my portraits. Cats are creatures of habit, and Peaches chose this spot to have her after-dinner bath every day for a few weeks when the sun was right; I knew it was a keeper whether a photo or a painting, so I photographed it several times over a period of several days, knowing I’d use at least one photo or all the photos as reference to create one painted image. A painting this size and level of details is a significant investment of time, so I had to wait until my schedule allowed the night-after-night sessions with tiny sections of detail. A Wonderful Gift This image was a commissioned portrait, a gift from one friend to another, of a dilute calico kitty named Peaches (yes, another Peaches). Here is the beautiful story of Peaches and her amaryllis. “For a period of several months in her 17th year, Peaches became very withdrawn, she stopped sleeping with her person, and spent most of her time in a guest bedroom. At the time, we thought this was it. Then a friend gave her this flower, and Peaches became fascinated with it, and would check progress every day. As the flower started to bloom, Peaches ended her phase of withdrawing. It will always remind us of the happy time when Peaches became herself again.” The gift is both the portrait and Peaches’ recovery. Are You Looking at Me? This is the guy who started it all. He fostered every stray kitten and cat I ever brought into my home, and shepherded me through the ups and downs of the fifteen years he was with me. More intelligent than many people I’ve met, there was never a dull moment during those years, and never a moment when he didn’t run to remind me how much I meant to him. For all that he was, I just couldn’t settle on the best way to represent him, but I’ve finally decided that the best depiction of his personality is of him being silly, rolling around in the sun and making sure I noticed how handsome he was. Waiting for Mom Fawn was a real live wire as a kitten—always swinging from something and talking about it—and was very attached to me; I had known her from her first moment of life, thanks to her mother, a stray, who honored me with choosing my home for the birth of her kittens. Darling Clementines Namir was a great model, and in the years he was with me I think he learned to intentionally strike a pose so that I would take his photo or paint his picture. Warm Winter Sun Nothing is so clarifying as brilliant early morning sun, and nothing chases away the chill of a winter morning. Here, Namir was lulled to sleep by the natural warmth and comfort. The Perfect Camouflage This was something I thought all cat companions could relate to, human and feline. Sophie really thought I couldn't see her because she thought she blended right in with the flowers. She almost had me fooled until I saw one of the flowers looking back at me and I knew I had to investigate. Sunday Morning Moses made it back upstairs after breakfast before I had a chance to make the bed, and I didn't have the heart to move her. So I got a sheet of drawing paper and my pastels and did a quick sketch of the scene, finishing it later from a photograph. It was a pleasure to work in a looser style and just to catch the mood, but not all the details. White Cat Reflecting My white cat was endlessly inspiring to me, and I would need two lifetimes to recreate all the images of her that I have photographed and saw every day. Sally was deaf and spent most of her days in her own little world in pursuit of her own happiness, which when possible included a rest, nap or long snooze in the sun. Winter Window Kelly pauses in the stark pastel light of a winter afternoon through the big north ­window in my studio, absolutely still in contemplation as she watches birds flit about at the feeders or Buddy the squirrel making a fool of himself. Kelly is petite for an adult cat, making the window seem vast, and the light is so diffuse that nothing has a hard edge. Peaches' Nap Spot Peaches joined my household at age 15, and in the five years she was with me she was the subject of quite a few creative endeavors. At her age, she was best at napping, and here she sleeps on the fleece cushion on a chair that gets the sun for just a few hours a day. Buster Lookin' at His Toes A friend of mine showed me photos of her cats, and this was apparently a typical posture for Buster with his legs stretched out and “looking at his toes”. I loved the sheer curtain and the traditional wooden windowsill, but rather than my usual pastel, I decided this would be more interesting as a simple little watercolor. It's a great thrill to have something printed, and some of these cards I even print myself as block prints. They are available in packs as noted, and a few have matching writing paper or notepads, or are even available as a 5" x 7" matted and framed print.

Bright sunshine on anything will inspire me, especially when it's illuminating one of my cats...and so I'd like to share that inspiration with other feline fans. These four designs are printed from my original artwork, each of them cats who've shared my life past and present.

After Dinner Nap

Stanley didn't have many relaxed moments during the day, but one of them was always a spot of sun right after dinner and a nice bath. Rather than disturb him by trying to share in his contentment and fussing over him, I chose to render the warmth of the sun on his side and the depth of the early evening shadows all around.

A Warm Bath

My white cat was endlessly inspiring to me, and I would need two lifetimes to recreate all the images of her that I have photographed and saw every day. With all that lustrous long white fur, Sally's baths are quite a production, but each bath is like a graceful dance, especially when taken in the morning sun.

A Rosy Glow

She found a warm spot to sleep in the sun on that old pink sweater of mine, and the look of contentment on her face was my first inspiration, especially since Miss Moses (we all thought she was a boy) had been a feral kitten and all her life hesitated to walk across the center of any room, finding security in keeping close to the furniture. But there she is in the middle of the room looking rather smug—I can almost hear her purr.

The Little Sunflower

Real sunworshippers, all of my cats wait for the sun to enter the house in the morning and take their appointed spots. The brilliance of that first light and its reflections around the room, plus the contrast of all the exaggerated straight-line shapes with the organic shape of little Cookie and her shadow inspired this one.

Custom combination

Sometimes the simplicity of a single color line or tone on a beautiful paper stock tells the story more expressively than a full-color, scenic rendering. The expressions, coat patterns and close-cropped scenes of cats just being the individuals they are inspired me to create these little cameos.

These cards were printed from a series of drawings I did just for fun years ago using photos from my massive cat image bank (calendars, magazines, books, old photos, anything else with a cat on it...).

My ever-inspiring family of felines causes me to carry both my camera and a sketch pad around the house. Quick, simple pencil sketches catch them hanging around the house and are my favorite warm-up to creating larger pieces of artwork. While I could live three lifetimes and never be finished with the images I can create from my group, friends also give me photos that are too good to pass up. Pencil can be challenging to reproduce, and I’m happy to introduce a new series in addition to my pen and ink and my full-color fine art notecards series.

All products are printed in soy-based ink on 25% cotton fiber stock with a 35% recycled content. In addition, the paper was manufactured in the USA using windpower using no bleach from trees in a managed woodlot. Cards are 4-1/4" x 5-1/2" with matching envelopes.

The stripes made me do it! The clarity of tabby cat stripes as they outline a cat's features and define its shape has always been an inspiration for more graphic designs.

These cards were block printed, a technique wherein the artist carves the surface of a piece of linoleum, leaving raised areas which will become the image. Ink is rolled onto these raised areas, then a piece of paper is pressed against the block and when it's lifted away the ink remains, leaving the image on the paper.

This particular image—"Fawnball"—is especially dear to me. Fawn's habit was to rest rolled up in a tight ball when waiting for me to finish something and give her some attention (note the eye watching you). This image was the inspiration for this whole series, and it is dedicated to her.

Fawn had a close call with an aggressive abdominal cancer around Thanksgiving, 1998. This is usually an immediate death sentence, but with lots of love and actually minimal treatment, all physical symptoms completely disappeared and for two months she was back to tripping me and racing me up the steps. That remission was one Christmas gift I will never forget.

I'm out of the notecards until after the holidays, but I still have a number of framed prints available! Please ask if you are interested.

These block prints are printed with a variety of colors and papers then trimmed and packed entirely by the artist. They are available both as packs of note cards including all the same or mixed images, or as a 5” x 7” matted and framed print. All framing includes a quality wood frame with glass and acid-free mat and backing.

Cards include a border as shown, and are printed in black, brown or rust on various natural color cover stocks in coordinating earth tones. They are blank inside, 4-1/2” x 6-1/4” and come with natural cotton deckle-edge envelopes. See below for samples of cards.

Aside from the cards and prints listed here, I have also printed these images on placemats, curtains and other items. Please ask if you are interested! These special items are one of the reasons my marketplace is taking so long to get going.
